How Do You Green It?

Hey guys! So unless you live under a rock, then I am sure that you have heard all about the “green” craze. It is everywhere! Celebrities, newspapers, and even Starbucks cups are telling us to go green. And while that is all well and good, a lot of us are still left with questions. Firstly, Why? And secondly, How? Well, I’m going to give you a few reasons why and then some simple ways how you can go green : )

Why?
The planet has a limited amount of resources. Making sustainable, eco-friendly choices, helps the earth by using less of it! Remember, every choice you make has either a negative or positive effect on the planet!

Going green can be good for your health. Choosing organic produce is always better because there are no pesticides, which can be a health hazard, especially if the produce is not properly washed. Many communities hold farmer’s markets, which can be a great place to purchase organic, locally grown produce. Locally grown produce is great because it is fresh. The shorter distance foods have to travel to get to your plate, the better, because the lesser distance means less pollution.

It is the right thing to do. Think about it this way: You keep your house clean, because who the heck wants to live in a dirty house? Helping keep your planet clean is the same thing. Although you cannot make as much of an impact as you make in your own home, everything does make a difference! It is just common sense. Do your part to help sustain the planet that sustains you.

Okay, so now that you have some reasons to go green, how can you go about it? Well, here are some simple tips to help green up your life : )

How?
Walk or ride your bike rather than drive. This is simple! Although not always possible, try to do it whenever you can! Riding your bike is cheaper than driving, and produces no pollution at all, except maybe a little sweat : )

Say no to paper AND plastic. Although paper is better than plastic because it does biodegrade, it is also heavier than plastic, and therefore puts more of a strain on the truck that is carrying it, resulting in more pollution. The best alternative to both is buying reusable bags, which are very sturdy and can hold a lot more stuff. However, if you really like paper bags, than reuse them a few times before tossing them.

Unplug things that glow. If you’re not watching a TV or using a lamp, unplug it! Electrics products like these are huge energy suckers, even when they aren’t being used. Who wants to pay for electricity they aren’t even using? (bhg.com)

Support local farmers. Typical grocery store produce travels nearly 1500 miles before it winds up on your plate! This burns fossil fuel and means a whole lot of carbon emissions, aka pollution. Supporting local farmers means fresher food and a healthier planet! (bhg.com)

Do full loads of laundry. This might seem silly, but think about it. Washing machines use water, energy, and money. So small loads means wasting water, energy, and money. Also, wash clothes in cold water as opposed to warm. 90% of energy consumed by washers goes toward heating the water! (bhg.com)

What types of things do you guys do to help work towards a greener planet? Let us know! We love to hear from you : )

  1. Diane said,

Thanks for all of the great information. It sounds to me like you are a company that really gets it when it comes to “Green”. I love the suggestion about riding my bike to work. Since all of you ride your bikes to the office, I think I’m going to give it a try, too. The weather is really starting to get nice, and I just think it will be a healthy thing to do.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work. We need more leaders in the “Green” movement to get the word out about how we can better care for the earth.

    Diane
